Build a Vermicompost Bin

Open vermicompost bin showing red wriggler worms in moist castings with newspaper bedding

Red wrigglers eat their body weight in kitchen scraps every single day. A 60-litre bin can process 1.5 kg of waste daily — enough for an apartment of four.

Bin design

Two stacked 60 L plastic crates with 5 mm holes drilled in the bottom and lid. Top crate holds worms; bottom catches drainage (vermiwash, a free liquid fertiliser).

Choose the worms

Eisenia fetida (red wriggler) is the only worm that thrives in confined bins. 500 g of worms cost Rs 400-600 in India.

Feeding schedule

Bury veg scraps under bedding. Avoid citrus, onion, spicy food, dairy, meat. Feed once every 2 days at first; scale as the colony grows.

Harvest castings

After 90 days, push everything to one side, add fresh bedding and food to the other. In 3 weeks worms migrate; scoop out the dark castings on the empty side.

Frequently asked questions

Will worms escape?

Not if the bin is dark, moist and well-fed. Add a damp newspaper cover.

Does vermicompost smell?

Healthy bins smell like forest floor. A rotten smell means you over-fed — stop for a week.

Can worms freeze in winter?

Move bins indoors below 10 C. Above 35 C, keep in deep shade.

How much vermicompost will I get?

500 g of worms produce ~3 kg of castings per month after bin matures.

What is vermiwash worth?

Dilute 1:10 with water — it's the best liquid fertiliser for seedlings and flowering crops.
