Growing Spinach Year-Round

Densely grown palak spinach plants in a wide shallow container on an Indian balcony

Indian spinach (palak) bolts the second it gets warm. Here's how to outsmart it and keep fresh leaves on the table every week.

Succession planting

Sow a fresh tray every 14 days. By rotation you always have one tray germinating, one growing, one ready to harvest.

Beat the bolt

Switch to bolt-resistant varieties for summer: All Green, Pusa Bharati. Mulch heavily and keep soil cool with shade cloth.

Cut-and-come-again

Harvest outer leaves only, never the crown. One plant gives 5-6 harvests over 2 months.

Hydroponic backup

When summer wins, switch to a Kratky jar hydro setup indoors. Spinach loves the steady water and cool roots.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my spinach taste bitter?

Heat stress or under-watering. Harvest in the morning when leaves are full of water.

Can spinach grow in containers?

Yes — 6 inches deep is enough. Wide is better than deep.

How often do I water spinach?

Daily in summer, every 2-3 days in winter. Soil should never fully dry.

What's the difference between palak and Malabar spinach?

Palak is annual and bolts in heat. Malabar is a perennial climber that thrives in Indian summers.

Best fertiliser for spinach?

Liquid nitrogen — diluted cow urine, mustard cake tea, or seaweed extract every 10 days.
